Queer Youth and YouTube

According to Bryan Wuest’s article “Stories like Mine”, one main way that queer youth use YouTube is to allow themselves to develop their personal and public identities. By seeing the way that others put themselves out there, they can more fully grasp the person that they want to be and the side of that which they want to show to the outside world. A second way is that they use YouTube to accumulate and digest the facets of queer culture, which allows them to recognize what they want to be a part of or contribute to within it. For both of these areas, Wuest focuses a lot on recognizing the fact that, in general, YouTube allows young members of the queer community to access queer culture more readily and this helps them to become a more active member of the community.

“Popular misogyny: a zeitgeist” Discussion

Sarah Banet-Weiser does a lot to distinguish Popular Misogyny from Popular Feminism. She notes that both movements are at odds with one another and that while the popular feminism movement is prominent and growing, the popular misogyny movement as an opposition remains much the same as it once was and yet still stays as effective. While much of the feminist movement is forward thinking and progressive, many people are not realizing that the misogyny movement still retains much of its power. So while we think that many of our problems have been solved for the better, we have really just been ignoring that they are there.

Sharing and Seltzer Podcast!

Hello all,

Just recently I’ve been working on a podcast discussing participatory culture and political activism in our modern age with my housemate Tyler Baldwin! In this podcast we take the time to discuss whats up in our digital society over a few cans of that good ol’ Sparking Water (Harris Teeter Brand). We came up with this idea because we both love sparkling water and I also needed something to help me keep talking while my allergies wreaked havoc.

Be sure to listen for our intro and outro music provided by bensound.com as well as background music provided by Jazz & Japan on YouTube. Not to mention our seltzer-consuming sound effects that we recorded ourselves!

Check us out on Podomatic!

Are podcasts just the newest radio?

Radio has classically been one of the most prominent modes of widespread information broadcast. Specifically radio is transmitted by radio waves which are electromagnetic waves at frequencies between 104 and 1011~12 Hz. They are typically done in broadcast format where a signal is sent out in every direction without regard to the location of the receivers because they may be at any location within that range.

Some argue that the podcast is just another iteration of radio, but Richard Berry at the University of Sunderland motions that the difference between the two comes from how they’re created and distributed. Radio as a form of media distribution has always been in this broadcast format, with variations in the production of the shows that are premiered. Podcasts however are not typically live like radio and are saved to be listened to at any point in time and distributed by internet websites.

Coming to you live – Cloud9 versus Faze Clan

Today, we are watching the last of the quarterfinal qualifiers for the Intel Extreme Masters Katowice 2019 Counter Strike: Global Offensive major.

The teams in this match up have a 2 win – 2 loss record and the loser will be eliminated from this tournament.

Live updates will be coming for you here:

1:32PM – Here are our map picks for this match-up:

  • 1. Cloud9 removed Train
  • 2. FaZe removed Overpass
  • 3. Cloud9 picked Cache
  • 4. FaZe picked Dust2
  • 5. FaZe removed Inferno
  • 6. Cloud 9 removed Mirage
  • 7. Nuke was left over

1:34PM – FaZe Clan will be starting on our Counter-Terrorist (CT) side after winning the knife round.

1:35PM – We have a very impressive first round from Håvard “rain” Nygaard who taps down 3 enemies, securing FaZe an easy first round win.

1:40PM – Nikola “NiKo” Kovač holds down the bombsite insanely well in close quarters combat with an AWP sniper rifle against four enemies! – Despite not being the designated AWP user for their team!

1:48PM – With only 6 health points, William “RUSH” Wierzba takes down two enemies to secure the bombsite for his team. This is a sorely needed play for his team who are down five rounds!

1:54PM – NiKo hits us all with a surprising game of cat and mouse, allowing him to get three kills and preventing the bomb plant. Many Cloud9 fans out there are disheartened because going in to halftime our scoreline is now FaZe 12 – 3 Cloud9. Faze clan only needs four rounds out of the remaining fifteen to win.

2:05PM – Dauren “AdreN” Kystaubayev defends the bombsite against two enemies to garner himself a total of four kills for the round and pushes the game closer and closer to the end – two more rounds like that and faze has this in the bag. The score is now 14:4 in favor of Faze clan.

2:22PM – In an absolutely stellar series of rounds, the scoreline has gone from 15:4 to 15:14! With this final round, we could either see a six round overtime or FaZe clan could take us to our second map of Dust II.

2:23PM – After losing ten rounds in a row, FaZe clan is able to pull themselves together and win the last round to thunderous applause, leaving us with a final score of 16:14 in favor of FaZe, the second map will soon follow. A surprising performance from Cloud9 there in the second half, and it was exactly what they needed to do to give them a chance at winning our first map but it just was not enough.

2:37PM – Robin “flusha” Rönnquist takes down 3 terrorists to deny the bombsite take after losing the first three rounds in this second map. We are already seeing a much better footing early on from Cloud9.

2:45PM – Not looking good for Cloud9 once again, what is supposed to be a fairly even match-up now looks very one-sided. Scoreline is 8 rounds Faze Clan to 1 round Cloud9.

2:46PM – I spoke too soon! Scoreline is now 8 – 2 as Timothy “automatic” Ta quickscopes four players on A site to secure the round for Cloud9. A very impressive play from him, hopefully we can see more like this in the future to help Cloud9 out.

2:56PM – A strong hold again on A site, this time from flusha allows him to win the last round of the half for his team. A 11:4 scoreline coming in to this half in favor of Faze clan does not look good but at least it is better than last map. Many die hard fans of Cloud9 like myself are hoping they can bring this one back from the edge like their ten round streak in the last map.

3:02PM Cloud9 have already won the first three rounds of this half, bringing our score to 11:7 still in favor of FaZe. However autimatic wins yet another round for Cloud9 in an absolutely ridiculous clutch with the AWP sniper rifle against four players on the B bombsite, including a double spray-down with the AK-47 at the very end.

3:12PM – Cloud 9 have brought themselves to an impressive 11-9 scoreline. With five rounds in a row will we be able to see them even this up like last map?

3:15PM – Again, I spoke to soon, it’s not looking good for Cloud9. Three rounds in a row for FaZe clan have put the entire audience on the edge of their seats.

3:21PM – NiKo throws down an impressive three kills with the AWP defending bombsite A on the Counter-Terrorist side to secure match point for FaZe. Cloud9 are one misstep away from being eliminated from this tournament.

3:23PM – With no money left to spend, Cloud9 cannot afford any good weapons and lose to a well equipped FaZe clan waiting for them in all of the right angles. With a final score of 16:9 FaZe clan will continue on in this tournament while Cloud9 is out of luck.

3:31PM – In a post-game analysis we see that Cloud9 had not played this map competitively in over three months, a factor which may have contributed to their loss.

Feedly – Down the rabbit hole we go.

Today I found a rather uneven distribution of posts in my feed. Today alone I had three sources from Hacker News, which is essentially a news feed aggregation site of its own. Basically that means I got double-filtered news so that’s not so great in terms of getting a quality, well rounded image of what is going on in the world. Also to be noted is that most of the articles I see are only a few hours old. Typically I do not have anything on my feed highlight that is more than ten hours old at the very maximum, and I also am receiving over one hundred articles per day from across just nineteen sources.

From the major news sources I see a good balance. Typically they cover a wide variety of topics. Today’s one that I found interesting, and that I only saw from one source was the Washington Post’s article “Anthony Weiner has been released from federal prison.” I noticed that since this only showed up once on my feed, were the other articles that said the same thing from different sources filtered out so that this was the one I saw? I wonder if that is just a way to prevent annoying duplicate posts, but it sure makes me feel that my media access is being controlled by feedly. That is not something I am completely comfortable with to be honest, but it may have just been that those sources chose what article to have shown on feedly. Something for me to keep an eye out for I guess.

Feedly – A first look.

From the beginning I have thought of “Feedly” much like a cleaner and more modern RSS feed. You could also see it as more of a formal version of Reddit. Essentially you start out by making lists of sources that you would like to hear from and group them by interest. For example, you could have one feed about music news, one about technology, and one from major news outlets. I made one combining classic major news sources and technology or science news sources.
Typically, I get about six articles from each feed that I have created for myself and they are often a random but evenly assorted group of topics. Half of my feed contains articles that come from major media outlet news, and the other half tends to come from sites like Wired or Gizmodo. The articles are also not summarized or previewed in any way; typically you click on the headline that you see in Feedly and it will take you to a thumbnail for the article that links to the news outlet’s site directly. In many cases this works out, but in some cases that i have encountered so far, feedly does not allow you to bypass the “free article viewing limit” that many of these sites have, meaning that if there is a source that I particularly enjoy and I am constantly clicking on their links, after a while I will only be able to see the headlines and not read in depth. In my eyes that is a major drawback because if I am constantly looking at the same sources because those are the ones that I trust or have selected, over time my options are going to be more and more limited, possibly pushing me towards outlets that I do not particularly prefer.

Check it out! – Isle of Dogs Film Review

Hey y’all,

I would love it if you could check out my new film review on Medium! Isle of Dogs by Wes Anderson was a example of a fantastic, motivational, and undoubtedly moving film that is an absolute MUST SEE of last year. Here’s a bit of what I have to say about the film:

It speaks a lot to peoples rights, and furthermore their duty, to step up when there is something going on in the world that is morally unsound and take action against it.

Make sure to check it out here on Medium!

Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs is a true inspiration for those who want to “Fight the Power.” All too important in today’s society.
